  • A free-trade zone (FTZ) is a specific class of special economic zone. It is a geographic area where goods may be landed, stored, handled, manufactured, or reconfigured, and re-exported under specific customs regulation and generally not subject to customs duty.

Free trade zones are generally organized around major seaports, international airports, and national frontiers—areas with many geographic advantages for trade.

When the Shanghai Free Trade Zone (FTZ) was first introduced in 2013, it was presented as a testing ground for new reforms. Where proven successful, these would be expanded across the entire country.

  • Shanghai Free Trade Zone is the first Hong-Kong Like FTZ in China. It covers an area of 28.79 square kilometers. Construction of Shanghai FTZ test area is a major move to comply with the new trend of global economic and trade development and to implement a more proactive and open strategy. In December 28, 2014, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress authorized the State Council to expand the China (Shanghai) free trade test area to 120.72 square kilometers.
